With so many students off campus during spring break, it is difficult for one to keep up with his or her favorite Lions’ sports team. Because of this, the Roar complied an update for readers to see what happened while they were gone.
Women’s Lacrosse
Over spring break, the women’s lacrosse team traveled to Seattle, Wash. and Portland, Ore. They left on Feb. 27 and traveled to Seattle, and they said were excited to take over the west coast. “It was a great experience being able to play teams from across the country. They were great competition, and it was fun having to adjust to a different style and level of play,” fourth-year defender Kayla Freund said. “We won two out of three games, and I hope we get to play Pacific again. When we were in Seattle, we walked around Pike Place Market and got to see the Space Needle. We walked around the downtown area in Portland. I loved being on the west coast, and I can’t wait to go back and see more of it.”
Men’s Lacrosse
Over the break, the men’s lacrosse team traveled to Lexington, Ky. The men played Transylvania University, suffering a loss of 2-7. They also traveled to Conway, Ark. where they played against Hendrix College and suffered another loss of 4-18. “I love long car rides, so the drives there were fun for me,” third-year midfielder Gilbert Ibarra said. “We got to watch a lot of movies on the way and even got to eat some really good BBQ in Hendrix. The games were tough losses, but I think that the losses show us how we can do better.”
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team traveled to Maryville, Tenn. to play in the conference championship, playing against Averett University, Ferrum College and Maryville College. After defeating both Averett and Ferrum, Piedmont went on to face Maryville for the title. The women suffered a loss with a final score of 60-48. “The game didn’t turn out like we wanted, but it was great/close game until the end when we had to start fouling them to give us a chance to get the ball, and they made their free throws,” third-year G/P Mary Bess Skinner said. “The score may look like we got beat pretty bad, but it was a neck-and-neck game until the end. It was fun to spend some of our spring break traveling with my teammates.”
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team traveled to North Carolina to participate in the USA South Conference Championship. However, the team was defeated, 77-75, by Greensboro College in the first round.
Baseball
Starting before students left for break, the Lions’ baseball team faced Maryville College at home for three days of play, losing two of the three games with scores of 3-0 and 14-11. They did win one game, 5-4. The team went to Memphis, Tenn. to play against Rhodes College on March 2. The men won with a final score of 8-0.
Softball
The softball team traveled to North Carolina to compete in the Grand Slam Tournament where they won two of the four games. They defeated Rowan University and Hood College, 12-9 and 6-5 respectively. However, the Lions were defeated by Berry College and Salem College, 8-2 and 9-0 respectively. Later, the Lions faced Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga. in a double header, winning both games, 9-1 and 8-5.
Tennis
The men’s and women’s tennis teams played William Peace University in North Carolina. Both teams won 9-0.
