People are always saying, “There’s nothing to do on or around campus!” Piedmont College is surrounded by different things to do. Sometimes just getting away from Piedmont and exploring the area can be the perfect getaway.
Taking a drive and enjoying a trip around Northeast Georgia is one idea. Just imagine driving down 441 with the windows down, and the radio blasting, . Northeast Georgia has a lot of things to offer. The Tallulah Gorge State Park offers hiking, nature watching, swimming, and many more activities for a small fee.
Pitts Park and the Cornelia Park both offer a great opportunity to get outside and be active in a beautiful environment. The Chattahoocee and Soque river also run through Habersham, lending great opportunity for fishing, or a day on the river.
If being outdoors isn’t your scene, then there are plenty of things that can be done inside a cool air conditioned building. Pull a Mackelmore and go thrift shopping. Both Cornelia and Clarkesville are home to many small stores with hidden gems inside. If a road trip is needed, then there is always Dahlonega, where there are just as many stores waiting to be explored. When all else fails, there is shopping in Commerce and Gainesville. Retail therapy is a good thing, just let it happen.
The bowling alley located in the Old Clarkesville Mill offers a great group activity.
College is all about finding yourself and trying something new. Well, why not try that new Italian restaurant in town? Piedmont has a few Mexican restaurants in town and a lot of pizza places that surround it. Look up a few recipes on Pinterest (don’t play, you know you have an account on there), hit up the local grocery store and try becoming the master chef of dorm cooking.
North Georgia Technical College located in Clarkesville has a full beauty school which offers massages, nails, hair cuts, and hair coloring at low prices, perfect for any girls day out.
The local music scene is a great one as well. Many restaurants in the area offer an opportunity to hear local artists while enjoying a great meal. Java Joe’s Coffee House has local music every Friday. Trader Johns Grille, Sharky’s and El Patron all have karaoke nights. The Copper Pot on the square also has Wednesday night trivia where you and a group of friends can compete as a team to win delicious food and prizes.
The Habersham Community Theatre is currently showing The Marvelous Wonderettes, and holds many shows throughout the year.
Habersham Hills Cinema 6 is always showing a movie that would make any evening a good one.
The Factory is a huge warehouse full of games that will take you back to your childhood days. It is located just an hour up the road in Franklin, NC. It houses laser tag, go-kart racing, bowling, mini golf, and other games.
There’s a whole world waiting to be explored. Sitting and complaining about how boring a place is does not help. Take charge and look around to see what is worth it. The state park, the shopping, and the food is just a small fraction of what Northeast Georgia has to offer to its residents. There might be something out there worth the adventure.
