WORK
Whether that is being able to finally read for fun, training for a marathon or getting the internship of a lifetime, summertime can be more than a break for college students.
Many students relish their summertime because it is the small break in the middle of the end of one school year and the beginning of a new one. It is a bittersweet season as well as an exciting one as students lie out in the sun and have fun. But why do so many students tend to not want to work during the best time of the year?
According to Nikki Means, sophomore mass communications major, she is working so that she can feel more independent and not have to use her parent’s money for the things that she wants. I could not agree more.
By working, it gives the student a feeling of independence that they would not otherwise get when lying in the sun soaking up the sun’s rays and partying. Yes, it is nice to have a break and to get away from all the work, but having such a great span of lapse could cause the student to get out of the mentality that they may have put themselves in during the school year.
Having a job during the summer and keeping the hard working mentality that one has when they’re in school is a completely different feeling than actually having to sit in lectures and write essays all the time.
So, in a sense, when you work during the summer, you are getting a break, but it is not the type of break that many think about when they hear the word summer. This is what often puts students off as they plan their end of the school year celebrations.

RELAX
Summer is the time to take a break and unwind from the challenges of schoolwork.
Chances are, if you have a job during the summer it will be minimum wage and you won’t be getting a lot out of it.
If you’re spending your time during the summer relaxing, you will have more time to reflect on the past year and possibly make changes that will improve your life for the upcoming school year.
You’ll have your whole life to work, so why fret over a job that means nothing to you for three months?
There are plenty of exciting things to do over the summer.
You could go on a cruise or go to the beach or for the real adventure-seekers, jump off a bridge.
Things like that would not be possible if you’re spending your summer working yourself to death.
Spend time with your family and friends.
Do something that is benefitting more than just yourself.
Volunteer somewhere or clean up the park on a walk. Do things that are relaxing, but helpful to others.
There are lots of places to go that will be new and exciting, even if you don’t have a lot of money.
Try filling up your car with gas and driving with some interesting rules, Such as: take roads that you’ve never been on.
Stop to eat or shop somewhere where you would never normally stop.
Grab a map or your GPS, take off and go to a place that you’ve never been to. Save up some time for yourself and take a creative break.
One of my favorite things to do during the summer is to find new crafts on Pinterest and release my creativity.
When you’re an adult and out in the real world, you’re not going to have a summer to relax or have fun.
While you’re in college and full of life, grab the summer by the horns and have the time of your life.
